The Inhabitants

Digital film, underwater series

The Inhabitants is a photographic series capturing spontaneous encounters with marine life while freediving around the world. Each image reveals the ocean as a living community of individuals, whales, fish, and other creatures moving through their own rhythms and routines. Through these moments of proximity, the work reflects on the shared space and vulnerability between humans and marine life.

Shot digitally and on film, this work intentionally avoids artificial light. By relying solely on the sun’s reach, the series preserves the natural atmosphere of the deep and respects the sensory boundaries of its subjects. This non-intrusive approach allows for a more authentic exchange, capturing the active intelligence and curiosity of beings who are not merely passing through the frame, but are consciously perceiving and assessing the world around them.

In these depths, intelligence reveals itself through mutual gaze and intentional interaction. The Inhabitants invites viewers to see the ocean as a world of distinct personalities, complex relationships, and sophisticated minds—a reminder that we are all part of one interconnected, conscious habitat.
